My name is Carie F. Sanchez and I am lucky to be part of the YCSD Team! I am the school counselor for Magruder Elementary. I have been with YCSD for 5 years and this is my 9th year as a school counselor. I have my Master’s in Psychology and in School Counseling. I am also the licensed instructor for Youth Mental Health First Aid for our district.
This year I will be working with Kinder, 2nd, and 4th, but please do not hesitate to reach out with any concerns!
I am the proud mother of two awesome teenagers, and we are also a military family. I started my career as a school counselor in Savannah and then we were blessed to move to VA, where I continue to grow as a school counselor! My name is Sara Haskins and I am so happy to be a part of the York County School Division and Magruder Elementary Community as a School Counselor. I have a Bachelor's in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from Old Dominion University. This is my 2nd year as a school counselor.
This year I will be working with 1st, 3rd, and 5th, but please do not hesitate to reach out with any concerns!
I grew up locally and I have worked within the York County School Division for the past 2 years as a Special Education Para Educator and Right at School Program Manager. I have always had a passion for counseling and working with elementary-age students in a school setting. I am here to support students, staff, and families in any way that I can. Our Mission
The mission of our school counseling program is to provide a comprehensive and developmental program that empowers ALL students in their academic, personal/social, and career exploration endeavors. We are only able to accomplish this through a partnership with our Magruder parents, teachers, staff, and community. We look forward to getting to know you and your family this year. What can your school counselors do for you?
Classroom Counseling –Throughout the school year, counselors will present classroom counseling lessons to students in grades K-5. Students will learn about many important topics which may include:
- Positive peer relationships and conflict resolution
- Emotional regulation and mindfulness
- Character education
- Career Exploration
- Test-taking strategies and study skills
Group Counseling –Students may be referred by parents, teachers, or counselors to participate in small group counseling. Group counseling topics are developed based on the highest needs of students and may include:
- Friendship and social skills
- Emotional regulation
- Resiliency (coping with stressors and/or change)
- Self-esteem
- Academic success (study skills and work habits)
- Military deployment
Individual Counseling – School counselors provide short-term, goal-oriented counseling. Referrals to community resources will be provided for students needing long-term counseling services. Students may speak with the counselor individually through parent referral, teacher referral, or self-referral. A student may talk with the school counselor about:
- Academic concerns
- Family changes or concerns
- Peer relationships and friendship
- Decision-making
Family Life Education – School counselors teach the Family Life Education curriculum to students in Grades K-3. Counselors and classrooms teachers will collaboratively teach the curriculum to students in Grades 4 and 5.
Gifted Program Contact – School counselors serve as the Gifted Program contact at the school. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.
Referrals – If you are in need of assistance, your school counselors can help by locating community resources or referrals for long-term counseling services.
